The Borealis String Quartet has established itself as an ensemble praised for its dynamic performances, passionate style, and refined, musical interpretation. Featured in numerous CBC broadcasts, the Borealis String Quartet has performed to critical acclaim and sold out concert halls across Canada. In Ottawa, their National Arts Centre debut was featured by CBC Radio on In Performance and The Gazette in Montreal chose their debut as a Critic's Choice event receiving rave reviews. They achieved further national attention as finalists in the CBC Great Canadian Music Dream Competition which was broadcast nationally on CBC Television. In addition to their extensive concertizing, the Borealis has filmed a music video for Bravo! Television at the Chan Centre which was debuted at the Vancouver International Film Festival and their critically acclaimed CD entitled Classic Borealis recorded for Skylark Records was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award.
With concert bookings already into 2007-2008, the Borealis String Quartet has established a stellar reputation in Canada. Last season, they had a very demanding concert schedule travelling across North America to critical acclaim. Highlights of the season included successful debuts for Music Toronto and the Glen Gould Studio, as well as performing in New York to a sold out audience for their debut at the Schneider Concerts at the New School in Manhattan. Also, they were honoured to be invited by the Emerson Quartet to be mentored in the inaugural Emerson Quartet International Chamber Music Workshop at Stony Brook University.
Frequently performing at festivals in the summer, the Borealis has performed at the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, Festival of the Sound in Ontario, the Montreal Chamber Music Festival, the Indian River Festival in PEI, and the Baies des Chaleurs Festival in New Brunswick to name a few. This summer will include performances at the Elora Festival, Festival Vancouver, the Mendocino Music Festival in California and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. This coming season, the Borealis already has a busy concert schedule of performances across North America and will be returning to New York to perform for the Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music. As part of their season, they will be performing a series of educational concerts at universities across Canada in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Physicists in celebration of the World Year of Physics. The Borealis String Quartet is generously sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts.
Formed in Vancouver, BC in the fall of 2000, the Borealis String Quartet is the Quartet-in-Residence at the University of British Columbia where they give regular masterclasses and teach chamber music at the School of Music.
